HOW I SECURED MY NEW JOB + 5 TIPS TO HELP YOU CRUSH YOUR INTERVIEW

F2FD49DD-B067-491C-AFF9-CC18954B747E.JPG

6 months, 37 back and forth LinkedIn messages, and 51 back and forth emails. (Yes, I definitely went back and counted every single message from the start.) This was the timeframe from when I first inquired/applied for the position that I just secured with my new company. The 51st email was the offer for my new Social Media Coordinator position! Let me give you a quick little backstory. I’ve worked in the Luxury Retail industry for one of the world’s most renowned leading brands LVMH for nearly four years. I’ve gained so much adequate knowledge and have made many valuable connections along the way. I am absolutely grateful for where I’ve come from, and even more proud of all of the hard work that got to me where I am now. PERSEVERANCE is my favorite P-word, RELENTLESS is my favorite R-word, and COURAGEOUS is my favorite C-word. I started looking for a new position because I felt at this point in my life, it was meant to be. I have always had a strong interest in the web, creative fields, social media, blogging, and creative directing. When I came across the open positions at my new company, I knew for a fact that I belonged there. This was a sign from God telling me this is it - you got this, Meghan. I just couldn’t believe that I transitioned into a career like this right here in my own backyard of Houston. A couple of years ago, I always had it in my mind that I would have to move to LA for a career like this one. Fortunately, I have been blessed to start my new endeavor here. In the process, I was even told NO not once, but TWICE. But that did not stop me. In this post I will be sharing with you some helpful tips on how I prepared myself for my interviews, and how you can also prepare yourself to crush your next upcoming interviews. Hint: it has to do with the 3 words that I mentioned earlier...

  1. LinkedIn is Your Friend

Before we get into tips for after you’ve landed your appointment for your interview, I wanted to share that I discovered my new job through LinkedIn on my own. I was actually surprised at how many people I talked to said they never really use it. “How did you hear about that job?” LinkedIn.. “Did they reach out to you?” No, I reached out to them on LinkedIn. Y’all, you must realize how resourceful you can be on your own. One thing that I love about LinkedIn is that you can connect with anyone of any position within the company you are interested in. You can connect with the talent recruiter, HR person, hiring manager, and even someone within the same role as you are hoping to get into. For example - I connected with and messaged people that already worked for the company, picked their brain about their experiences, and kindly asked them to pass my information/resume along to the hiring manager. Needless to say, everyone that I contacted was so nice and actually responded back to me. You won’t get a response from every single person that you reach out to, and that’s okay you just have to keep doing your research and find other contacts. I’m sure you already know this, but make sure to keep your profile updated with your current position, experiences, achievements, and of course a decent profile pic!

2. Have a Killer Resume

I can’t stress enough at how important it is to have your resume on point. I’m constantly updating my resume just for the sake of it. Most importantly, I highly highly highly recommend ONLY using resume paper for your resume. At my former job when I’d see people dropping off their resume on regular computer paper (sometimes creased), I cringed a little on the inside. You should always keep your resume short and to the point. Mine is ONE page and I’d rate it a 10! Include only the most key and relevant information. This helps the recruiter/interviewer quickly learn about you, and understand how you would potentially fit into the role that you are showing interest in and/or interviewing for. More often than just sharing your duties like ex.) “Assisted management with filing data” you should solely focus on the proven metrics that you have accomplished and brought to the table. How much revenue did you bring in last year? Did you win Presidents Club? Did you receive any type of award/appreciation certificate? Put that on your resume! Employers really want to see what you have done in the past, and they want to see what you can do for their company if they decide to bring you on. Always have more than one copies with you, and bring a portfolio of your work (depending on the type of position) if it entails.

3. Sell Yourself

You got the interview locked in, now what?! Preparation and focus. Trying to switch careers is most certainly another job within itself. I did a lot of studying and research about the brand and the industry, which helped me understand exactly what they were looking for in the perfect candidate. When you’re truly passionate about the role that you’re trying to fulfill, it shows. I made sure that I knew exactly what the job description was, and made sure that I could confidently sell myself and nail it. Since I interviewed for a more creative position (Editor), I actually printed out two of my blog posts to show my creativity and to show who I am as a creative. I knew for a fact that was something that not every candidate thought of doing, so I wanted to step outside of the box. It turned out to be a great idea! That was sort of like my personal “portfolio.” Check this out, in my second (and last) interview I met directly with the CEO and she asked me to see my Instagram. Inside, I was like “yasssss, here you go!” I pulled up my IG page and handed her my phone. She scrolled, complimented, asked about certain photos, and even mentioned that I had great engagement on my posts (this was great because relevant small talk is a really good sign). But could you imagine if I had something to hide that I would have been embarrassed about? I probably would not have gotten the job. This was a proud moment for me because of who I truly am as a person. I love my feed! It isn’t perfect, but it’s me. Prior to this, she asked if I had a separate IG page for my blog and personal. You guys know I don’t, but a lot of you do! My tip is: If you have a personal life that may not be a great idea to show your future employer, then you should definitely keep that separate because you never know what kind of situation you could be in. Not saying you shouldn’t be who you are - but be mindful about what you put out because a lot of the times when they are considering hiring you, they are probably searching for you on social media to see who you are outside of that building. I have never been asked that in an interview, but I was ready.

4. Have a Strong Follow Up Game

Sending that follow up and thank you email before and after your interview is so vitally important! This shows that you have no problem with being consistent, and keeps you on the top of the hiring manager’s list without them forgetting about you. You always want to send a follow up email confirming your interview, etc, and you most certainly want to send a thank you email within a couple hours after your initial interview. Most people say send a thank you email within 24-48 hours, but I think that sending it within at least 2 hours after your interview shows that you are serious about staying in contact with them. That will probably assure that you stay on the top of their minds and list when closely considering candidates for the role. When I told you that I was told no during the process, I sent a respectful email asking why, and that is what got me the job I wanted after all. Giving up was not an option for me! In my interview, one of the directors mentioned to me that she liked the way that I was always sending nice follow up emails. She said because she had been in my situation too, and she knew that it was not easy getting into the door. I recently mentioned this follow up technique to a friend who had been waiting to hear back from a company that she interviewed for, and it worked for her, too! I told her - you can’t apply and not send follow up emails. This is like letting your application float out in the milky way galaxy with no destination, just thin air. As many applicants that are applying for the same role as you, you have to stand out. Otherwise, you will probably just get skipped over because you aren’t really putting yourself out there for them to recognize you. From the time I got confirmation for my 2nd interview, to the the time it actually took place was about 3 weeks. The hiring manager was going out of town and even though I was confident, I still wanted to keep my own buzz in their ears about me while she was away. Don’t aggressively overdo it to where you annoy them, but just know how to be consistent in a graceful way. Like I said, these are some things that worked for me. We will all have different experiences with this. You can always reach out to me if you don’t know what to say! I’d be happy to help.

5. Be Relentless, Have Patience, & Perseverance

Oh, and of course be courageous! Earlier I mentioned that it took me 6 months to secure my new position. This is starting from the beginning, when I sent the very first LinkedIn message to my now colleague about passing along my information to the hiring manager after I applied. It takes courage to be vulnerable and reach out to people you don’t know for help. This just shows that you are relentless, resourceful, and will set you apart from the other candidates. It just has to come naturally and requires a strong will. I personally have a strong mind, and when I want something - I will do my best to get it. The outcome of success depends mainly on your willingness to persevere and be persistent. I also practiced “manifestation” regularly - and I still do. This means so focusing deeply on what you want, to where you picture yourself having/doing it until it becomes a reality. Can’t forget to mention, lots of praying. This is personal for me. Throughout the whole process of me securing this new position, I had to keep reminding myself that what is meant to be will be. I did my best work and I did my part. The rest, I left up to God to figure out how he wanted this to work for me. My patience was tested, and I won’t lie, I let my light dim a little. I would come home after work and have a pity party because things weren’t unfolding quickly enough. With my support system, I was reminded of all the things that I’m trying to tell you now. Practice patience. Control what YOU can control. That’s all you can do.

I really hope that you found this helpful! I know that it was pretty lengthy, but I truly do believe that all of this is valuable information that will help you in your process, since it has helped me. We won’t have the exact same interview experiences and results, but I can guarantee you that some of these tips will have proven results. I still don’t feel like I shared everything that I wanted to, so I’m thinking about doing a part 2 to this. What do you think?

3 WAYS TO STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

1C8DB5B4-7762-4199-A6D9-6E1EF81C6E26.jpg

Well, it’s already March 1. Who, what, when, where, why, how? Doesn’t matter because you must keep going! As we are about 90 days into the new year, many of you have more than likely stuck to your goals and a lot of us may have slipped a little bit - but that’s totally OK. Some days, weeks, or months may have not gone as planned but each day is a new day to get back on track. Anytime I feel like I’m not “doing enough” I like to write down what I have done so far, and what I want to improve. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable = GROWTH.

START SMALL:

Starting small can truly make a significant difference in your results - whatever the goal may be. I personally have fitness and health goals that I want to accomplish. I also know that drinking water is one of the most important things to do to keep your overall wellbeing on track. My “small goal” is to drink more water daily. That was out of my comfort zone. I have written down the benefits of consuming healthier things which has kept me going down the right path. Starting small can apply to literally anything you want or willing to work for. It can be as simple as purchasing a domain name of what you desire your blog or business to be, picking up a book when you lay in bed at night instead of your phone, or even as simple as signing up for that workout class you’ve been putting off. Do SOMETHING each day. You can even just start by writing down 3-5 things each day or week that you want to get done and put your plans into action. That one thing will just bring you closer and closer to the outcomes that you desire. I just started listening to books. For a while I never thought that I’d have the “interest” to listen to a book because I simply didn’t have time. SMH. Those are limiting beliefs. I shifted my mindset and started listening to Manifest Now by Idil Ahmed. Man, that book is truly mind changing. I definitely recommend listening to it on Audible or purchasing a physical copy. You’ll start to realize how much you can make positive changes in your life by simply changing the way you think.

PUSH BEYOND CONVENIENCE:

Because convenience is comfortable, right? We must think beyond this. You have to want to create a plan of action for pushing the boundaries on what you think is possible. I know that almost everyday I can choose to be a victim of convenience or I can choose to go above and beyond for myself. I wake up and read a scripture or two and then I get my day started. I choose to have a mindset that motivates me to not be mediocre for the day. You did not wake up this morning to be mediocre! You can push beyond convenience by simply waking up an hour earlier (or a few) than you normally do to get something else done before you carry on with your day. I scheduled myself for a 6:30 am workout this morning! That’s something that I have never done because I used to think - heck, I could still be getting one more hour of sleep instead of going to a workout. That was mediocre thinking. These muscles aren’t going to tone themselves though, sis! After I left my one hour workout I thought, “what else can I do to be great for myself today?” That wasn’t convenience, that was pure motivation. One simple change in your routine is way more powerful than you think. All it requires is just effort.

HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE:

I GOT THIS! YOU got this! Holding yourself accountable is another key to breaking through your comfort zone. You can tell a family member or close friend what you are trying to do and 9 times out of 10 you won’t have to remind them to hold you accountable. They just do because they love you! My mom and my friend Shay hold me accountable with the smallest things. Shay simply reminds me to email someone or simply post on social media. Having an accountability parter definitely can help, but it isn’t 100% necessary obviously because you’re your own person and can do what you want to do. Let’s say for me, I want to start a new series on my blog with styling videos called “———————-——-” boom! I put it out there! Once you share it with someone or say it out loud - make yourself DO IT. Take baby steps. Smaller steps can easily de-sensitize yourself to the feelings of anxiety. Earlier in January I wrote sticky notes on my mirror with affirmations that I repeat out loud daily. Me making sure I start my day this way is one way that I hold myself accountable. Do you see how simple stepping out of your comfort zone can be? I don’t like producing the same results, I want more and I want better! No one is going to do that but ME. YOU for you. Sometimes even changing your atmosphere can help with your results. Instead of working at home in your comfort zone, go to a public place or coffee shop to send those emails, etc. You didn’t drive over there for nothing….so get it done in a different environment. Holding myself accountable with my actions has driven to me create another source of income with my blog. And that, I am proud of. What’s holding you back from stepping out of your comfort zone? How are you going to put new actions into motion for improved success?

MEET THE GIRL GANG

share-1 (3) copy.JPEG

My girls. My squad. My #GirlGang. From left to right: Nikki, myself, Brandy, Shay. I’m sure you guys might have seen this post floating on Instagram of us shutting DOWN the streets of Times Square during New York Fashion Week. We were there Thursday-Monday and definitely made the most of our experiences! While we did not attend any shows, we had quite a few brand meetings set up along with many events to attend. Safe to say we were making boss moves, not just trying to get into all of the shows. While we would have love to attend a few shows, we all agreed that creating and building relationships with the people who you need to know in the industry would be more beneficial for us in the long run. When you think of it that way, they will remember who you are and will keep you in mind for future opportunities like collaborations, and personally invite you to their shows, etc. Keep in mind that you have to do the work, too. Always always always follow up and thank them for their time no matter how big or small the opportunity is.

Meet the #GIRLGANG.

SHAY of @shaymone

Shay and I have been only been hanging out since the early summer, but we have known each other/and following each other a few months before we started hanging out. We also have closer ties because her future sister-in-law and I have known each other since middle school pretty much. It feels like we’ve been friends for a decade even though we haven’t. That’s how strong our connection is. I don’t have too many girlfriends, but I would consider the beginning of this friendship TRUE, REAL, and I can tell that it will be long-lasting. Sometimes, you just know. Out of all 4 of us, Shay is the dominant planner and the organizer. *Insert praising hands emoji here* She definitely keeps us all in line and on our toes with our to-do’s and tasks for the week. Also, she’s a petite mother of 3 and a certified BOSS in everything that she does all while being a boss at her full-time job. www.shaymone.com

BRANDY of @authentically.b

Where do I start? Brandy’s Instagram handle is exactly what she IS! AUTHENTIC. She’s not afraid to be b o l d and fearless and her personal style reflects that as well. She has the attitude to back it up, all the while she is as nice as can be. Brandy is also the mother of her super handsome son, Grant! If you follow her on Instagram, her stories always reflect how her family brings out her soft side. I love that about her. She is also an elementary school teacher everyday and runs a kick-ass blog www.authenticallyb.com When B came into the picture, this was only in the summer time, too. We finally met in person when I agreed to be on a DIY news segment that she hosted on Houston Life TV. We clicked, and not too long after is when we all linked up!

IMG_4243.JPG

NIKKI of @newtexacali

Is she from New York? Nope. Is she from Cali? Nope. Her handle describes her well because she is a wanderlust and an absolute free spirit. Nikki and I met last year at a Create & Cultivate event here in Houston and have been connected ever since. Earlier this summer is when we really started to talk more and hang out. Nikki is also a mother of two gorgeous kids that I call “my fraaandsss” and knows how to balance everything so well! Not only does she talk the talk, but she walks that walk, too. She recently quit her full time job a few months ago to take on blogging full force. I’m so proud for her because all of us in the group aspire to blog full time! ha. (until then, we’re doing the work.) We recently had a conversation about aspirations, goals, and manifestation. It’s like, once she quit quit her job, things started to unfold for her. She’s featured in the LIKE.toKNOW.it book, she was nominated for Houston’s It girl of Instagram, and is/has been working on paid partnerships. www.newtexacaligal.com

Our Driving FORCE: Each other

Considering that these friendships are new and flourishing, if you have been following along with us you can tell that we have a special bond. It’s like God had this ALL planned out. I was living in Austin with barely any friends that shared the same interest, let alone looked like me. Not saying that matters as much, but it just feels real when you can connect with likeminded people who are on the same level as you, and who just gets you. We love to celebrate each other’s WINS and accomplishments. Always rooting for each other, and helping out with anything when we can while being STRAIGHT UP HONEST. We get things DONE and take names. I’m very observant of behaviors and normally have a guard up when I sense something about someone that would turn off my interest. I don’t feel that when I’m with them. That’s how I knew that we would be the perfect #GirlGang. We all have different personalities, but at the same time we have a lot of similarities. A few of you asked about how we got to do some of the things that we did at NYFW. This is when we put all of our heads together and made those things happen. If one of us got an email from a brand, we responded and included WE and sent off one another’s names, handles, and media kits to everyone that contacted us and vice versa. Four is better than one! We always put things into perspective differently which is how we come up with “The Plan.” We did the dirty work on our own. WE contacted brands, WE contacted PR companies, WE did the following up and made it all happen. And when WE got the opportunities, WE made sure that WE created the hell out of some amazing content which got us noticed for MORE opportunities. The possibilities are truly endless when ideas are bounced around like basketballs. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have some of the connections that I currently have, and some of the knowledge that I have about the blogging game. We’re all still learning and growing in progress and WE are doing it together! I thank God for these ladies and I hope our stories inspire you all. Keep up with us on social because we have some amazing things brewing in the master pot! Thanks for reading <3

JULY MOOD

share.JPEG

Oh July,

When the summer heat is starting to get r e a l  and all you want to do is stay cool by the pool or hang out at the beach...shaded of course. I actually love July because it's right smack in the middle of the summer season and normally I'd be planning a vacation. I won't be going anywhere this summer, but In August I plan to head back to Los Angeles and New York in September for fashion week. I'm so excited for those two trips! If you have been following me along for a while, you know that I am engaged. Our wedding was supposed to happen later this year, but we pushed it back to next year. You know, sometimes your plans don't always line up the way you thought they would - and we decided together that it would be best if we give ourselves more time to plan and prepare. In the last few months we have moved back to a different city, and with us being between work transitioning and such we have no desire to rush our wedding. What I am also happy about is - most of what we got done for the wedding will already be taken care of for next year! Yes God, I trust your timing. *praising hands emoji* Just thought I'd share an update on what's going on with my life on a personal aspect since this is my platform, and you guys are here for a reason. Thank you for reading!

On another note, what styles have you been into this summer? I have been collecting so many accessories which is unusual for me since I normally don't wear a ton of jewelry. I have so many gold layering necklaces now (especially with the medallions) as well as shell and tortoise earrings. I have also been into dainty stackable rings on multiple fingers. Who am I? I even bought a jewelry holder from Ikea that I loooove! I'm also looking forward to wearing more tops with plunged necklines with layered necklaces for as a subtle staple. Layering accessories can easily transition a simple top or dress to complete any look. Feel free to shop some layering necklaces below - including this "Oui" necklace by Natalie B Jewelry that I just bought because, one day I'll be in France. Until then, OUI!

Firstly, we can't forget why we celebrate Memorial Day. Yes, it is a nice long weekend for relaxing by the pool while enjoying BBQ but we should still pay our respects by saying a quick prayer for families who have lost their loved ones while serving our country. I have military in my family (none of them have lost their lives while serving - thankfully) so I have a great respect for our veterans.

Since Summer is quickly approaching, I have been shopping so much. Lord help me....and my wallet. In my previous post I mentioned that I have been buying so many dresses, skirts and tops with tortoise buttons. Don't ask why - it just happened that way and I am in love with everything that I Have purchased/ordered. I literally had like 8 packages delivered (no exaggeration) in the past week. Not sure how I avoided my fiancè asking me what the hell I have been buying  but I finessed my way through. Hahaha.

MAY MOOD

MAYMOODcopy2.jpg

Thanks for stopping by again! I am back with another mood board post. It seems like a lot of you liked reading my first April Mood post so I am happy to have started this monthly series. If this is your first time reading my mood board post - I decided to create a collage of images that inspire me by my mood, style, and what I'm feeling or getting into that month.

Gosh, where did time go? How are we already almost half-way through the year? That being said, you have 7 months to figure that sh*t out. What are we waiting on? The question that we must all be real about. In real life we all have road blocks that delay us and our plans but that's okay, just as long as you keep going. We all go through different seasons at different times, and if you don't feel like your "time" is now, then it is certainly coming.  If you look at the bottom left quote in the collage, it says "A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms."  I am not going to sit around and complain about where I am, I'm just going to do me and grow along the way. With where I'm headed, I have no tolerance for negativity and I want to surround myself with like-minded individuals who are on the same page. I have come across some amazing women on Instagram who inspire each other to keep killing it! I love that.

On another note, Houston has been having some gorgeous weather lately and we can already feel that Summer heat coming! I have started doing a little shopping for the Spring/Summer and everything that I am loving now is either linen, or has a tortoise button down detail (or both.) I recently bought two dresses, two skirts, and a top that I cannot wait to wear. Take a guess? They all have tortoise buttons. Now, I'm thinking that I need some tortoise earrings to go along with my tortoise mood. haha. I can't wait to share these new Spring looks with y'all pretty soon. My style is becoming more and more simple  and I am starting to gravitate more towards elevated basics that work well with versatility. What are you looking forward to wearing this season? Can't forget that staple basket bag! Now, you can find them in lots of different styles! Below, I linked a few of my favorite ones. Also, please check out my new "Shop" page at the top menu of my blog! This Summer style list will make you want to spend it all before your vacation.

APRIL MOOD

rsz_1aprilmood.jpg

I decided to do something a little different here on the blog. I had this "idea" in mind for a monthly mood board blog post for a while now, and I am finally putting it in motion! Can we say YASSS for ideas = action? My new monthly mood board series will just consist of an array of images that reflect my mood, thoughts, feelings, and overall inspirations for that specific month. Most of these images I find on Pinterest (you should follow me on Pinterest here!and some of them might consist of my own personal photos. But mainly Pinterest because that's where I get most of my visual inspiration from. I am so pleased with how my first mood board for this month of April came out because all of the images I can relate to in some sort of way, and I made this myself in Photoshop. Just by looking at the collage, it just makes me feel....alluring. Certainly a direct reflect of my current emotions.

Life update: My fiancè and I just relocated back to Houston from Austin so that whole process has been long and busy. It's so exciting to be back closer to family and friends! We also didn't realize how much we had (that we didn't need to take with us) until it was time to pack up and move. With having some time off from work, that gave me the chance to donate a bunch of clothing and things to Goodwill and start fresh. I have also been using my time off to focus my time and energy on wedding planning, spending time with my parents, my two dogs, exercising, figuring out money moves with Des (ha) and lots of self care. April has been great so far, and we're already almost half way through it. I also just picked up Gary Vee's new book Crushing It because I've heard so many good things about it! He's a pretty smart and tenacious guy who knows what the hell he's talking about. So I'd definitely take his advice. New month, new goals. Happy April, friends!

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO VALENTINE'S DAY

The details - Dress: Tularosa // Bag: Zara // Boots: Zara (similar here) // Photos: Vivian Kwan // V-Day Cookies: Bear Necessity Cookies

Happy Monday, y'all! With Valentine's Day being only a couple days away, I guess I'm considering this a "last minute" post for all of your last minute ideas. Wait....I just realized that every time there's a holiday (that we need to shop for) I always always always create a "last minute" post. I promise I'm not always late with everything. Hahaha. I do a lot of things better under pressure and I know that I'm not the only one! Just being realistic. I don't always shop for birthday/Christmas/Valentine's Day gifts months and weeks ahead, I shop the week before..maybe the week of..or a couple days before. *slaps forehead* If you're reading this, you're probably a last minute shopper too (or just reading the blog & I thank you!) so don't worry, I got you.

Although Valentine's Day is not a holiday that I go crazy about, I do still buy a little something for my parents (some sort of couple's thing) and my man. This year, we aren't planning much. I'll be working that day so I'm sure it will be a nice night in with my favorite bottle of Prosecco and I ain't mad at that. Des' birthday is also next week (Lord I still have to buy him a birthday gift) and we will be going on a little fun quick trip so I'm okay with laying low this week/weekend. IF - and that's a strong if we do something for Valentine's Day, I plan on wearing this Tularosa dress because it's so comfortable, casual, yet flirty, which would be perfect for a date night out. And it's on major sale!!!! What are your plans for Valentine's Day? Do you and your significant other normally go all out or just Netflix and chill?
